This study on the north coast of Peru under range conditions was to determine the feasibility of using imported frozen semen from specialized breeds of goats to improve the genetic potential of Criollo goats. Fifty-four Criollo does that had previously kidded were selected and randomized. Frozen semen from Saanen bucks was imported from Switzerland. Two Criollo bucks were used for natural matings. Nine females were bred to each male. A randomized design were treatment I: A.I. 24 hours after doe exhibited heat; treatment II: A.I. 24 hours and 30 hours after doe exhibited heat; and treatment III: controlled natural mating 24 hours after the does exhibited heat. The conception rate was 66.6, 72.2 and 61.1 for treatments I, II and III (no significant differences). When conception rates were compared for services between 6 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 1 p.m. to 6 p.m., there were no differences (68.6 and 66.6). Conception rates according to the month that the A.I. or mating was performed was 61.5, 11.0 and 87.5 percent for July, August and September. More than 50 percent of heats were in September. The average gestations were 150.7, 150.7 and 148.3 days for singles, doubles and triplets in A.I., and 144.4, 146.2 and 144.3 days in natural mating for singles, doubles and triplets (no differences). Average birth weight for male kids in A.I. was 3.1, 2.3 and 1.9 kg for singles, doubles and triplets and 2.1 and 1.4 kg for doubles and triplets female kids. For natural mating the birth weight was 2.9, 2.2 and 1.5 kg for male kids in singles, doubles and 1.9, 1.3 kg for the female kids in doubles and triplets; there were no single females in any treatments. When weights were adjusted to males equivalents, we obtained for A.I.; 3.1, 2.2 and 1.9 kg for singles, doubles and triplets, respectively and 2.9, 2.2 and 1.4 kg for singles, doubles and triplets in natural mating. For the treatment I there were 4.3, 69.5 percent parturitions of singles, doubles and triplets; 12.9, 74.9 and 12.4 percent for the treatment II; and 13.6, 45.4 and 40.9 percent in treatment III. The general average was 35 parturitions, 69 kids obtained, 59.4 percent males and 40.6 percent females. Average kids/parturition was 1.9
