Storage insects of basic food grains in Honduras

Faunistic studies were carried out in rural stores of maize, beans and sorghum in Honduras. Of the 25 coleopterous species found the most important pest in stored maize and sorghum was Sitophilus zeamais. Prostephanus truncatus was only of local importance in maize stores and Rhyzopertha dominica was found mainly on stored sorghum. Of the secondary insect pests, Cathartus quadricollis was the most abundant species in both maize and sorghum stores. Acanthoscelides obtectus and Zabrotes subfasciatus were the only bruchids found on beans. Four Lepidoptera were also identified, of which Corcyra cephalonica was an important pest on stored sorghum. A loss assessment method, adapted to given situations was developed and applied during three storage periods. The cumulative weight loss in maize ranged between 7-4 and 8.8 percent. The applied control techniques were often ineffective due to lack of pest control knowledge by the farmers. Unsuitable insecticides such as chlordane, DDT or methyl parathion were used and/or incorrect dosages of malathion were applied. However, insufficient persistence of malathion under the climatic conditions of Honduras was proved and therefore its effective replacement (lime, new insecticide) is considered. Recommendations for future post-harvest activities in Honduras are also discussed
