Indexing quarantined apple and pear cultivars for viruses and mycoplasma-like organisms

This report gives details on how pome fruit introductions in quarantine are tested for latent virus and mycoplasma infections. Each cultivar, rootstock or species is established in a screenhouse and indexed in the field. Those in which no disease agents are found are then distributed to fruit breeders in North America. Viruses were detected in 60 per cent of the 192 apple and 40 per cent of the 164 pear cultivars indexed during the past 13 years. The procedures described do not involve use of greenhouse space or elaborate equipment
