Brucella melitensis in Greece: current situation report

Brucellosis is a notified disease in Greece. For sheep and goats there is an obligatory vaccination (Rev l) programme of all the young lambs and kids (3-7 months of age). After 8 years of vaccination we noticed a gradually reduction of sheep and goats abortions also a significant reduction of the positive animals in the flocks and a reduction of human infections. In a complete typing of brucella strains which were isolated in our Laboratory from sheep, goats and cattle were recorded the following results: from 51 sheep Br. strains 6 were Br. melitensis Biot. 1 and 45 Br. melitensis Biot. 3. From 10 goat Br. strains, 2 were Br. melitensis Biot. 1 and 8 Biot. 3. From 5 cattle Br. strains 1 was Br. melitensis Biot. 1, 1 Biot. 3, 1 was Br. abortus Biot. 1 and 2 Biot. 3
