The economics of oil palm

Describes and analyses the oil-palm sector and its role in the national economy of producing countries. Emphasis is given to micro-economic aspects of production, processing and marketing, and macro-economic aspects of the sector as a whole. In addition, attention is paid to physical and institutional factors that have a profound influence on the economic performance, such as ecology, organization of services and policy matters. Eight countries in the three major production regions, South-East Asia, West Africa and Latin America, have been selected for analysis. Together these countries offer a representative view of the situation in about thirty producing countries. The findings in these eight countries provide the basis for conclusions about the possibilities and limitations of the oil-palm sector in producing countries
