Storage, transportation, handling, sampling and survey of processed palm oil

About 70 percent of the palm exported is after it has undergone processing/modification. Some of the processed palm oil exported is consumed without further processing, while others are used after further processing. Palm oil is processed under strict quality control such that its inherent quality and nutritive value are maintained. The oil, both in the crude and processed forms has excellent keeping qualities. But, like all the other oils and fats, its keepability is adversely affected if the oil is not handled properly. On its long journey from the refiners' storage tank to the end users storage tank in a far away country, processed palm oil has been known to have been subjected to abuses which affect its quality and cause contamination. A clear understanding of palm oil's characteristics is helpful to surveyors and also to ensure a truly representative sample is taken. In order to assist all those who come across processed palm oil in its long journey, the Palm Oil Refiners Association of Malaysia has published a guide book. The guide book gives details of how to pump, store, transport and heat the oil without adversely affecting its quality or causing contamination. It also gives useful hints to surveyors and to those responsible for taking samples
