NAFTA, MERCOSUR and the EU: lessons for the FTAA: a European perspective

The evolution of the European Union, therefore, is hardly comparable to the objectives pursued by the FTAA. If one wants to find a point of comparison in Europe it would be rather the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) which was created in the fifties by those European countries not wanting to join the European Economic Community.
