Analysis of cocoa (Theobroma cacao L.). Progeny trials in Trinidad: inference bands and their use in comparison of yield

Examination of the forms of dependence of annual dry bean yield of cocoa on the age of the trees, showed that the Mitscherlich-type curves adequately describe the apparent relationship for a number of cultivars grown in Trinidad. Approximate simultaneous inference bands of the underlying response functions of each cultivar can be constructed and used in comparing the annual output of each cultivar over the duration of studies. However, varietal comparisons based on respective maximum annual yields and the time it takes the annual yield to reach a level, within some unit of its maximum, can provide a more useful approach in selection trials. Cultivars, which failed to show differences on the basis of the approximate simultaneous inference bands were found to be significantly different on the basis of comparison of the maximum annual yields.
