National Implementation Agencies Meeting 18 July, 2023 (English)

The meeting discusses the challenges of dealing with EU regulations regarding Cadmium levels in chocolate production. The conversation includes discussions on negotiating purchasing, paperwork, and financing options. There is also a focus on understanding how material can be downgraded quickly and how this affects farmers. The group discusses the need for transparency between chocolate makers and farmers to ensure fair practices. They also discuss sampling methods for measuring Cadmium levels in different soil types and at various stages of cacao bean processing. Lastly, preliminary results are shared from measurements taken using new technology released last year in Latin America. Daniel discusses his research on improving sample preparation for detecting cadmium in cocoa beans. He suggests coupling various technologies to better understand the entire system and not just focus on one aspect. There is also discussion about a new machine called Emacs that can accurately measure cadmium levels in samples with minimal preparation required. The group also talks about the importance of careful sampling processes and avoiding using IMC 67 as root stock due to its high accumulation of contaminants. Additionally, Liz provides some key takeaways from both Manuel's and Daniel's presentations and emphasizes the need to distill this information into actionable recommendations for the cocoa sector.
