Tissue culture of cereal cultivars with increased salt, drought, and acid tolerance

The Tissue Culture for Crops Project at Colorado State University has produced NaCl-tolerant tobacco, oat, and rice plants. In each case, the selected tolerance is inheritable and stable in regenerated plant progeny. The project has also developed high-frequency, long-term plant regeneration methods from tissue cultures of wheat, rice, pearl millet, proso millet, and oats. From one starting embryo of rice, we can produce up to 127 500 plants in 6 mo. Over 4 000 plants have already been regenerated from NaCl-tolerant tissue cultures of rice, wheat, and pearl millet
