Rural financing in Guyana
This paper attempts to quantify the volume of credit reaching the agricultural sector over recent years, as well as looking at its composition and its size relative to the contribution of agriculture to national Gross Domestic Product. In the second part, the background to this credit flow is analysed in an effort to higlight why the allocation of investment resources to agriculture has not been greater. In the third part, the demand side for credit is considered. Finally, in the light of concerns about the limited supply of credit and its distribution among different sized farmers, varous policy options are considered and a number of recommendations made.
