Recent advances in cell and tissue culture

In the past, plant cell and organ cultures were seen simply as a tool for mass propagation or virus eradication. Today, cell and tissue cultures are playing a central role in applied plant biotechnology for mutant selection, gene transfer, artificial seed and secondary metabolites production, to mention just a few applications, whilst robotics is being applied on order to increase the productivity in mass propagation of ornamental crops. The focus of this paper is on two topics involving tissue and cell culture: the maintenance of genetic stocks; and the introduction of variability to widen the genetic base of a species
