Virola koschnyi, a promising species for reforestation of moist forest and tropical rain forest

The introduction to this paper presents general information on the biology, ecology and silviculture of this little known species. It is followed by a short account of nursery production of seedlings, plantation establishment and growth of the species, carried out as part of the Cuatro Esquinas Project at Colpachi in the district of Le Virgen de Sarapiqui, Costa Rica. Seedlings were raised from seed collected from natural forest, and planted in July 1982, at an initial spacing of 3 x 3 m over 1.25 ha. Data from permanent (thinned) plots indicated that the species reached an average height of 10.5 m and diameter at breast height of 13.3 cm at 6 yr old.
