Effect of stocking rate on milk production of goats grazing on ryegrass
This work was conducted at the animal research station of Carbo, Sonora, Mexico in order to evaluate the effect of stocking rate on milk production of criollo type goats grazing irrigated rye grass (Lolium multiform) pastures. Three different treatments were evaluated: T1 with 50 goats with free access to pastures 24 h a day, T2 with 75 goats and T3 with 100 goats with controlled grazing time of 5 and 3 h/d, respectively. The last two groups were fed with a mixture of cottonseed hulls 85 percent, sugar cane molasses 14 percent, and urea 1 percent. The milk production/animal/day was 0.650, 0.543 and 0.492 kg and the milk production/day/ha was 32.5, 40.7 and 49.2 for 50, 75 and 100 goats/ha respectively. Dry matter consumption of the mixture were 0.903 and 1.11 kg/animal/day for T2 + T3. No statistical differences were found between groups, nevertheless the most economical treatment was T1
