Costs, benefits, and farmer adoption of agroforestry

To address these questions, this study analyzed the agroforestry experience from twenty-one projects in eight countries of Central America and the Caribbean and drew together the lessons to help direct and provide input for the design and execution of future efforts. The specific objectives were to: documents past agroforestry efforts and their lessons for on-farm tree planting; determine the costs and benefits of agroforestry systems from the farmers' perspective; determine the relative advantages and disadvantages of different types of agroforestry systems under different site and resource conditions; identify the impacts of institucional factors and government policies on the adoption of agroforestry systems. This chapter summarizes the evolution of agroforestry efforts in the Central America and Caribbean region, briefly describes the methods used and characteristics of the projects reviewed, and summarizes the findings on household benefits from agroforestry, extension approaches, and policy impacts. To the extent possible, the findings are compared with those in other regions.
